Taking Great Family Photos – Remembering Daddy’s girls

Rue and MaryRue TiltedA good camera, natural light, and a couple daughters you love can make for magical moments. It is truly worth the time and effort to take great family photos.

There is no better reason to slow down at the end of a long day and take a moment to spend some quality time with your children than great family photos like these. Taken when two of my girls were about 2 and 4, I can remember this day like it happened last summer, not 8 summers ago.

I had just bought a new Nikon D700 and wanted to test its portrait making abilities. The girls obliged. Every time I look at these I catapult back to the moment and enjoy once again “daddy’s little girls.” Technically, the key here is “good light”. That means natural lighting close to either sunrise or sunset. There is a reason both are called the golden hours of photography. The shadows and soft lighting as the sun sets and rises create the type of pictures you want to blow up big and put on your wall. Do everything you can to avoid flashes and harsh midday lighting.

MaryRueMy girls are older now, but images like these never fade. I’ve taken many more like them as they’ve grown older creating a tapestry of memories that bring me more and more joy.

Grab a camera and take a quiet moment with your children today. Find some good light, share some laughs, and capture the images that will remind you someday of when they were “daddy’s little girls”. Great family photos are worth all the love you put into them.
