You find love when you are focused on another. Whether it is kissing your wife as she sleeps and you slip out of bed to make breakfast for her, or it is in more severe circumstances and you sacrifice yourself so another can live, love is found when we do something unconditionally for another person.
For years I had horrible relationships. Why? I was selfish, I was more concerned about what someone was going to do for me, and thought little about what I’d do for them. And the word unconditional, it might as well have been a four-letter word.
As my life fell apart after the jet crash, it was only when I began to serve others that my life began to rebound. And it was in the midst of this humbling journey that I met the love of my life. I was filled not only with my love for her, but my desire to serve her. Since we met it’s been 15 years of marriage and 7 children, and without fail, when things are rocky all I have to do is look in the mirror. Even if the problem isn’t totally me, the answer is always the same, do something for her expecting nothing in return. Give of yourself, and things will get better. And they do. Always. And I love her more today than the day I was smitten.
Easter is tomorrow. This love for another is what I think about when it comes to this celebration of Christ’s sacrifice and victory. Christ could have avoided that cross, but he allowed himself to be brutalized. For the thief, for the prostitute, for the tax collector, for everyone. That is love.
Want to know the best way to celebrate Easter. Do something freely for someone else. That is where you’ll find love.
