Music is a powerful force that can awaken the child in anyone. Writing an article on music therapy and PTSD recently, I thought back many a Christmas ago to when Isaac got his first guitar. Even though as his father I’m much older, the excitement he shows in these pictures is how I feel almost every time I pick up a guitar, joy and all is right in the world.
Music proves that in our darkest hour good things can come forth from us, music expresses moods that are hard to express otherwise, music fits any occasion.
I love my guitar. It allowed me to take the first steps to healing from PTSD and severe depression, and it is a joy I pass on to my children. I know that at times in the future when they feel alone, they will have the music.
Music is a reminder that our soul can be awakened at any age, under any circumstance. When we see something “good” channel from inside us through our fingers or voice, we are given proof there is still a light inside us waiting to be revealed. Whenever I write a new song, that is what it feels like, a revelation. A bit of magic that was already inside of me that only needed a little push to be actualized into something real.
