Life should be lived with focus and passion.
How do you pass that on to your children? It’s simple. You share the passion.
Too many people speak of passion but live there lives in an altogether unpassionate way. We can begin to muddle, so focused on paying the bills, building our 401k, meeting the expectations of others and doing the sensible thing that life can become a bore. And then we wonder why our kids tune us out and we lose credibility.
Thankfully, it is never too late to live life with passion. It just takes a spark. I started in the midst of severe PTSD by picking up a guitar, something I had wanted to do my whole life. That was almost 16 years ago and music has helped me heal ever since. It is also a way I communicate passion to my children.
When they see me enjoying the thrill of playing my own songs, it is contagious. These pictures aren’t unusual. It is hard for me to pick up my guitar and the kids not join in. Now, it’s not always climbing on my head while I play, but whatever their reaction, it is a joy! We share the passion and I teach them a lesson. This is life.
You can start with something small – learning the guitar, camping, art, whatever. But focus on it, revel in it, be a kid again, and make sure to have an open door for the ones you love when they want to join in. Passion is contagious and if you feel like your children have tuned you out, tune them back in with passion.
